Snowboarding

Snowboarding is a great Michigan sport. It has the perfect conditions and we have a lot of great resorts to ski. They don't compare to the mountains out West or East, but we do have some fun places to go.

The Stance
The resorts around here usually groom the trails so a more agressive stance is required. You should have a good majority of your weight on your front foot. You want to be attacking the slope not letting it attack you. This is a lot different then skiing powder. When in powder you want to relax and lean back. You really need to focus on keeping your boards tip up. Don't be super agressive because you will fall. You may think that a groom trail is the nicest way to ride until you ride a brand new batch of powder. You will fall in love I know I did, and it doesn't hurt to fall in powder either.

Powder Skiing
Powder skiing is much different than snowboarding. It's easier and it can be faster. Skiier's always have a speed advantage because they have less surface area on the ground. A board is big and a little harder to move in snow. Skiiers need to relax and lean back also. They don't want to have a bunch of snow pile up on there ski's then you would fall head first. It also helps to stay leaned back if you are cliff jumping so you land correctly off of the cliff. This is usully just on big mountains. Michigan doesn't really have any mountains like that around here. The only one that I know of is Mt. Bohemia in the U.P. If you plan on going here take old gear and do not go if you are a beginner. It is a tough mountain that has a lot of glades skiing wich means it doesn't groom everything and it has a lot of natural enviroment such as rocks and little cliffs. It is not a beginners hill let me tell you.

Just try to have fun on the slopes and be safe don't do anything I wouldn't. : )
